Headed down to almost heaven West Virginia this past weekend to do some camping and exploring. It was a bit of a last minute trip that was supposed to end up farther north near Charleston, WV was relocated after Kanawah State Park decided to shut their gates at 9PM. So we trucked down another hour and ended up at the Army Camp primitive camp site on the New River at midnight.

A nice night sleeping on some gravel led way to a sunny morning. We explored the area a bit and found some real live townies. A couple discussing how someone accidentally got bit while feeding someone's pet grizzly bear. Apparently it was a hot news item. We then ran across Glade Creek camping / boat launch area. It was much nicer and even closer to the river. It was enough to change campsites even though it was only a few miles away. All the primitive campsites are free which is all the better.

After the relocation we headed off on a mountain bike ride and came across a waterfall that we hiked halfway up the mountain to try to find the source. Pretty scenic and no one around. No luck making it to the top. Headed back to camp to meet our neighbor campers. The one good ole boy first thing told us how 18 years earlier caught a catfish twice the size of himself right in that same spot. Ended up hanging out then taking a hike up the Glade Creek trail. Good hike that ended when the sun went down. Sunday was an early exit for the drive back. Looks like a good opportunity to learn how to do some rafting or kiting on the New this summer.
